Talking Dead: Maggie Rhee facing off with Negan will highlight season 10 extended episodes

Maggie Rhee’s return and face-off with Negan will be a major part of The Walking Dead’s six new season 10 extended episodes on AMC.

The show’s executive producer Angela Kang made the revelation Sunday on a Talking Dead special hosted by Chris Hardwick.

Angela and TWD cast members disclosed plot points from the extended season, which begins airing new episodes February 28.

Filmed after the coronavirus pandemic began and after season 11 stopped taping, the scenes will expand viewers’ ideas of specific characters by delving into their backgrounds.

As one of the most beloved characters to appear on the show, Maggie (Lauren Cohan) has been the subject of much speculation after barely being seen since season nine in 2018.

In a sneak peek of the new episodes’ premiere, Maggie is shown looking for her son Hershel (Kien Michael Spiller) among the rubble of a burnt-down building, which housed her group.

One of her associates conceded that they had been followed by The Reapers, a new gang that had come ‘out of nowhere’ and attacked Maggie’s former home.

‘Maggie has been gone a long time,’ Angela pointed out. ‘She has seen some things out there in the world, and in true Walking Dead fashion, it’s pretty hard to escape your past sometimes. Especially when the past is a group called The Reapers and they are perhaps scary and have chased you where you are.’

Maggie will face old nemesis Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), whom she came face-to-face with in new scenes.

Negan killed Maggie’s former husband Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) in grisly fashion, bashing his head in with with a wire-wrapped baseball bat he named ‘Lucille’, but the cold-blooded killer later reformed.

Angela and TWD cast members Seth Gilliam (Father Gabriel) and Paola Lázaro (Princess) hinted in the special that viewers would see a new side to Negan after learning about his past.

The episode ‘Here’s Negan’ will depict the antihero’s story before the apocalypse and in its earliest days, showing so much more of who he really is.

Khary Payton (Ezekiel) hinted that fans would learn more about his ex-wife Lucille (played by Jeffrey’s real-life wife Hilarie Burton), who he named his barbed-wire bat after.

‘There’s an incredibly serious and nuanced story that comes from that reveal,’ Khary emphasized. ‘It’s so much bigger and so much more amazing than just the reveal.’

Angela said that Hilarie had been ‘just perfect’ for the role of Lucille, as she and Jeffrey had a great, dynamic chemistry when they worked together.

Lauren popped in from home to say that she’d looked forward to the scenes Maggie shared with Negan, though she didn’t think Maggie would have enjoyed them.

‘We’ll see a lot about what has made certain bad, terrible people the way they are,’ Lauren relayed. ‘That’s an episode I’m particularly excited for fans to see.’

The Walking Dead Extended Season 10 Preview Special featured Angela, Paola, Seth, and Clarke Wolfe, from the Walking Dead Universe Twitch channel.

Storylines for the upcoming episodes would feature a lot of ‘character work,’ Angela said, with some of that focusing on the relationship between Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Carol Pelletier (Melissa McBride) after the emotional roller-coaster they’d been on with The Whisperers.

‘When you have a friendship that deep it can go to some painful places,’ the EP noted, adding that Carol was still haunted by her role in the purported demise of Connie (Lauren Ridloff). ‘Sometimes people have to be really, really open and raw with each other even if it’s not easy.’

The episode ‘Find Me’ will also see Daryl encountering a new character named Leah (Lynn Collins) in a cabin filled with walkers, as viewers learned after watching a table read featuring Norman, Lynn, Melissa and Ezekiel.

‘Without giving too much way, Leah is formidable,’ Angela said, smiling. ‘These two have a very complex situation that arises after they meet. We wanted to tell this story from Daryl’s past, and I don’t want to say too much more, but we’ll let people see how it unfolds.’

In one episode, viewers would catch up with the ‘stormtroopers’ that apprehended Princess, as Angela shared that their brief appearance earlier in the season was ‘just the tip of the iceberg.’

She threw viewers a bone by pointing out that the stormtroopers had matching, clean and well-constructed uniforms, which suggests they are part of a much larger organization.

Paola said that Princess would experience ‘a lot of tension’ from the other survivors she traveled with, as they felt like her big personality put them at risk.

She also promised that audiences would finally understand why Princess used exaggerated behavior as a defense mechanism.

‘She’s made her own mistakes, and soon hopefully she can forgive herself for those mistakes and others can forgive her,’ Paola said.

In one episode, Gabriel and Aaron (Ross Marquand) would take part in ‘an old-fashioned Walking Dead survival story that tells us a lot about the state of Alexandria,’ Angela volunteered.

The scenes would show the two men on a search for food while also having philosophical exchanges about whether people were ‘redeemable,’ she noted.

She also conceded that Gabriel might at some point question his faith again.

Robert Patrick of Terminator fame will join them in at least one scene, as shown by a table read with the characters Gabriel, Aaron and Eugene (Josh McDermitt).

In that scene, Robert’s character expressed cynical opinions about the future of the world as Gabriel urged him to be more positive.

Seth said he loved shooting those scenes, joking, ‘It was like being back in acting school: You’re the priest. You’re the one-armed freak. And you’re crazy. Go!’

Like many other TV shows, The Walking Dead had to adjust to filming during the coronavirus pandemic.

Angela said they shot the extended season 10 episodes with smaller groups, sticking largely to scenes that could be filmed in their backlot, except for one location ‘just down the street.’

‘It was a little surreal because we had to have a lot of PPE, personal protective equipment, on pretty much at all times,’ said Seth. ‘Crew members couldn’t be closer than 10 feet from us, so there was this kind of bubble around you. As I walked, people would be backing up and backing away, trying to keep the 10-foot distance.’

Paola said she once forgot she was wearing a plastic ‘ZShield’ and went to brush her teeth before a scene, only to discover she’d coated the outside of it with toothpaste.

The Walking Dead will return Sunday on AMC with first of six extended episodes for season 10.
